The basics

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small post, usually made of titanium, that is placed in the jawbone where a tooth is missing. After it heals, the implant acts as a sturdy base for a replacement tooth.

Depending on your needs, implants can support:

  • A crown to replace a single tooth
  • A bridge to replace several teeth in a row
  • A denture to replace a full arch of teeth

The general process

How implant treatment usually works

Every plan is different. This is the general path most implant treatment follows.

  1. Consultation and imaging

We talk about your goals, examine your mouth and take dental images, such as X-rays, to look at the bone and nearby teeth.

  2. Placement

The implant post is placed in the jaw. The area is numbed, and sedation may be an option if you feel nervous.

  3. Healing

Over time, the bone heals around the implant. How long this takes varies from person to person.

  4. Your final tooth

Once healed, your crown, bridge or denture is attached to the implant.

Some people need extra steps first, such as removing a damaged tooth or adding bone. We will explain your plan before any treatment begins.

Who may be a candidate?

Every patient is evaluated individually. Things we look at include:

  • Your overall health and medicines
  • The health of your gums
  • The amount of bone in your jaw
  • Habits such as smoking

Dr. Feras Al Rezk will talk with you about the benefits, risks and alternatives, so you can decide what is right for you.

Caring for implants

Implant teeth need daily care, just like natural teeth. Brushing, flossing and regular dental visits help keep your gums and the area around the implant healthy.
